Get off the bench, Skinny!

Ask the Cookie Queen: the benches in the sitting area in medical clinics are there so that people who are heavier than average have a comfortable place to sit. They are not there so you can have extra space between you and the numerous vacant chairs around you. What do you expect, a very heavy person to have to ask you to move, please, so he/she can sit?

I never noticed this before. The clinic i used to work at didn't have benches and we saw fat AND pregnant people.

You are correct - technically, we bought the benches for patients who are challenged by their weight and have difficulty fitting into the regular chairs. Although, we also thought it would be nice for new moms with their babies in carseats and for sick kids to lean on their parents. And damn, those benches are expensive!
